The inaugural Windybanks Fishing Club Gone Fishing Day 2023 event was a huge success!
What a great event, with over 50 attendees and 20+ junior anglers keen to hone their fishing skills. The weather was beautiful, we put the new gazebo and tables purchased from the DPI Fisheries grant to good use.
The day kicked off with a group discussion on responsible, sustainable fishing practices and tips on where to find fish and how to catch them. It was very pleasing to see such keen participation by the juniors. We then ran three activities in parallel. Knot tying, a casting clinic, and group fishing from the rock wall.
Not surprisingly, the juniors caught some great fish including Yellowfin Bream, Mullet, Flathead, and a Goby! Junior James had fish of the day with a 57cm Dusky Flathead.
At midday we converged on the ‘Station’ BBQ area for a sausage sizzle where each junior received a bag with saltwater and freshwater fishing guides and measuring stickers kindly provided by Alex Stollznow the education officer at NSW DPI Fisheries. 5 lucky junior anglers just starting their fishing journey received a rod and reel combo from WBFC. We ended the day with lucky draw prizes for the kids with lures, brag mats, hats, coolers, fishing tackle and a fish cooler bag provided by our club sponsors.
Special thanks must go to NPWS for use of the beautiful Bobbin Head venue, and of course the NSW DPI Fisheries department for your support – we couldn’t have run such a great event without it.
